Dye Recipes

Dyes can be used to color the visible pieces of fine steel plate armor. This is permanent coloration for the armor itself, and is not to be confused with the new LoY armor tinting, which colors a specific armor slot on the player. The extracts needed for the dyes are made by either a shaman or a rogue, using alchemy or make poison, respectively. These extracts can then be used by anyone (no specific skill check) to be combined into dyes. There is a smithing skill check when the smith then applies the dye to the armor. If you still need clarification on the following, please post to the message boards..

Information on the LoY prismatic dyes can be found here.

These are the VERY basic steps to creating dyes. See the detailed explanations below for how to complete these steps

  1. Make the extract
  2. Make the dye
  3. Dye the armor

Step 1. Make the Extract -- Extracts MUST be combined in either an alchemist's medicine bag (by a shaman only), or in a rogue's mortar and pestle (anyone can combine in mortar & pestle, but non-rogues will have higher fail rates). The "empty vial" needed is sold by the dye supply merchants - you CANNOT use poison vials for this recipe.

drop locations
other ingredients
blue Permafrost crystals many creatures in Permafrost, on ground in Dire Wolf Pens in Permafrost, ground spawn on the golra island in Timorous Deep empty vial, flask of water
green Evergreen leaves found lying on ground in Greater Faydark, lighter shade of green, uncommon and hard to see empty vial, flask of water
red ("berry") Sarcoscypha fungus fungus types in Upper Guk & Innothule Swamp, on ground in LFay Faerie camp empty vial, flask of water
brown rust Russet oxide - there is ONLY a 1-resin version various elementals, also some lying on ground in Steamfont, elemental warriors in the Hole; various rockfiends, stonegrabbers and shaded stones in Luclin zones empty vial, flask of water
red rust iron oxide -- there is ONLY a 1-resin version various elementals, also some lying on ground in Steamfont, elemental warriors in the Hole; various rockfiends, stonegrabbers and shaded stones in Luclin zones empty vial, flask of water

yellow

jack o' lantern fungus on ground in LFay Faerie camp, scarecrow types in WK, Unrest, etc. empty vial, flask of water
black Charcoal OR blue slumber fungus OR green goblin skin OR froglok skin OR red cockatrice feather

charcoal: various elementals, elemental warriors in the Hole, iron & stone guardians in Nektulos, golem-types, including Terror (plane of Fear)

Blue slumber fungus: ground spawn in LFay Faerie camp, drops off mushroom folk in Sebilis

green goblin skins and red cockatrice feathers are a Kunark drop

empty vial, flask of water

The elementals (earth/air/fire/steam) for the oxide/charcoal drops can be found in places like Steamfont, Lavastorm and Najena. Still stumped on where to find the ground spawn dyes? Here's some hints on how to Find that Dye!

Step 2. Make the Dye - can be made by anyone, using the above extracts, and combining them in a medium clay jar (made by a potter, this is a combineable container. You lose the jar on combine) along with merchant-sold resin

  • darker shade - 1 resin, 1 extract -- the LARGE bracer when dyed with 1 resin black is slate (pale gray) in shade
  • base color - 2 resins, 1 extract
  • lighter shade - 3 resins, 1 extract

Step 3. Dye your armor: Take a completed piece of fine steel plate armor, place it in the forge along with 1 dye, 1 jar of acid, 1 jar of lacquer and combine. Once dyed, the color cannot be removed. You CAN fail on this part of the process (it's a skill check versus your smithing skill - trivial <=62), read your combine message carefully. On a failure, the armor will be returned to you, undyed, and you lose the dye, lacquer and acid.
