Just Where Do Those
Recipes Come From, Anyway?
Some of the recipes that you will find on this site have been found
by player experimentation. Other recipes have in-game sources (books,
NPC text, etc.) Below is a listing of known in-game sources of recipes.
- Alchemy - the "old" alchemy recipes were found
in the various letters of Jonas sold by alchemy
merchants. After alchemy was given a complete overhaul, new
recipes were found by experimentation.
- Baking - there are currently 13 cookbooks and one"Delivered
Note (containing the recipe for winter chocolate) sold by
various merchants throughout the lands.
There are several inaccuracies in the books, and a large portion
of the currently known recipes have been found by experimentation.
Recently (May/June 2001), recipes have begun appearing in town
newspapers, the content of which is subject to change with every
patch.
- Brewing - Basic recipes are sold in the Brewers Limericks
book. The Nature's Beverages text contains recipes for
converting foraged items into various nonalcoholic drinks. Pages
from Brodder's Diary contain more recently-added recipes,
though not all of them have been successfully created at this
time. All these recipes are merchant-sold.
A few recipes, such as othmir algae ale, have been found via experimentation.
- Fishing - Recipes using the tacklebox (fishing lures
as well as a few fish recipes) were found via experimentation
as well as via hints dropped at Fan Festivals.
- Fletching - basic information is found via the merchant-sold
Bowyer's Guide and On Fletching texts.
- Jewelcraft - One basic text on jewelcraft exists in-game.
It does not contain information on imbued (deity-specific) jewelry.
- Make Poison - Many books exist in-game (sold
by merchants) dealing with the creation various regional poisons.
Many of these texts are written in languages other than Common.
- Pottery - Most recipes are contained in the merchant-sold
in the Basic Pottery book. Information on the making of
deity-specific idols can be found in the Art of Idol Sculpting.
The three known small deity recipes were found via experimentation.
- Smithing - Many recipes are merchant-sold. The Basic
Blacksmithing book contains many of the basics such as files,
studs, boning, containers, banded armor, etc. Other merchant-sold
texts include the Armor and Weapons Guide, Dirge of
the Fireforge, Of Pike and Mancatcher (iksar weaponry),
Firepride's Guide to Shieldcraft, and Rings, Chains
and Arrowheads. Various NPCs in different towns explain about
various racial armors and weapons, and such information is listed
in the listing of smithing merchants
found on this site. Forged velium weapons were discovered via
experimentation and no companion text has been found. An additional
text, How to Dye and Stain contains information on creating
the dyes for fine steel plate armor.
- Tailoring - Again, many recipes are merchant-sold.
The How to Sew texts are mainly used to clarify the different
pelts needed for the 3 sizes of patchwork armor. The Tailoring
book contains recipes for patchwork, studded and reinforced armors
plus backpacks. On Terrorantula Silk contains recipes for
Erudite cultural tailoring ("Steelsilk"). Leathers
of the Vale contains recipes for Halfling cultural tailoring,
while Mithril Leathers of the Fier'Dal contains recipes
for wood elf cultural tailoring. On Quivers, unsurprisingly,
contains quiver recipes. An orc chief in Lesser Faydark drops
the Chronicles of Wu, containing th recipes for raw silk
and cured silk armor, as well as Wu's fighting gauntlets and the
tailor-made whip. Master Wu's Tailoring Techniques contains
the recipes for the rest of the Wu's fighting armor. For the Velious
tailors, there are three additional texts: Fine Furs contains
the recipes for holgresh, othmir and velium hound fur armors;
Velium Leatherworking contains the recipes for tigeraptor,
black panther, haze panther, arctic wyvern and cobalt drake armors;
and, Frostweavers Silken Garments contains recipes for
